Ce.R.R.Co. Centro Ricerche e Relazioni Cornaglia
Collection “I quaderni dei Grandi Adulti”.

An important research managed in the USA at Federal level, on 2800 Older people, to evacuate the importance of the mental exercises, did demonstrated that who got at least 10 memory exercises for their memory, succeeded in approach mental tests much better than others. The results in the people concerned, firmly persisted for not less than three years and they also see their self-esteem and self-.confidence increasing too and consequently their capability in solving daily life problems.

These are the principals that had supported the Centro Ricerche e Relazioni Cornaglia di Torino to coordinate the 4° Primer of the collection “The season of Great Adults” How Training my Memory It has been wrote by the same authors that in Europe are managing or following the “Memory Training Centre Method“, of EURAG, The European Federetion of Older PeopleMemory is the ability to preserve information and collect it; it can be identified with that group of functions which are located in the brain and which make it possible to record messages or information thanks to the cooperation of the sense organs (hearing, sight, touch…), to organize and preserve them, to recall them at every moment. Memory is the basis of our cognitive abilities; every aspect of our life and behaviour is strictly linked to and guided by the memory of past experiences. Memory is the tool which allows us to preserve in time the traces of learnt knowledge and therefore to adapt ourselves to the surroundings: “remember means being able to adapt”.

Memory disease in the process of ageing is one of the most well-known and common neuropsychological deficit. More and more people live with anxiety the perception of a decline in their cognitive efficiency. They complain about sudden memory lapses, feel inadequate in a world where the number of information we are provided with, has grown enormously, at a rate which is becoming faster and faster. More than half of over 65-years-old-people complain about a less efficient memory. In older people the feeling of a reduced cognitive efficiency and of memory decline comes from both strictly neurobiological factors and from psychological and social factors, which combine, thus becoming stronger: giving up every activity which implies the slightest cognitive engagement is the most negative result, with isolation and retirement from social life as a consequence. “How Training my Memory” clearly describe with simple words the main brain modifications while ageing; how the memory work, from which depends its decline and how to train the memory and keep it young and efficient. »>enter for more information.

Nerve cells, the neurons, are the basic units of the brain. With ageing neurons are progressively lost, but thanks to the high number of nerve cells (redundancy) and the ability of the remaining cells to increase, the connections with one another (cerebral plasticity), our brain is able to keep his functional integrity till old age.At every age exercise, as real physical training, can preserve the excitability of neurons and change their structure. “Neurons are lost but their connections increase”. Some frequent problems among older people are for example the loss of objects or the inability to carry out actions, with the risk of leaving them unsettled. In order to keep active, older people must allow themselves more time than in the past, because learning can require more concentration. Surroundings participate in this exercise, too: you need intense light and some specific aids when reading or studying, and if you are not sure about the information you read, you should have it repeated. Losses of memory sometimes “hide” what you do not want to remember or you are not interested in! Furthermore, there are no “miraculous medicines” for memory. Delaying cognitive impairment means delaying old age: it would be harmful to extend life without an adequate cerebral working. Many epidemiological studies agree on the fact that dementia has a long pre-clinical stage, during which interventions made in order to prevent the development of the illness can be effective. An adequate stimulation from the surroundings acts on the supplies of neuronal plasticity. The use of body and mind (psychomotor activity, ergotherapy, psychosensory stimulation, kinesitherapy) is the most physiologic and effective remedy for the damages caused by the process of ageing. Memory training courses bring a very good animation into residential care where residents, by and large, have little opportunity to gain self-confidence or self esteem. Joined ”Album of the Exercises” N° 1 e N° 2“ complete the Primer and get people able to test the Memory Training themselves.
