Ce.R.R.Co. participated at the 2014 ASA Aging in America  conference, with the presentation “New Services for Elders: Technology, Management and Human Caring»

The authors, Dario Bracco (sociologist doctors) and Ugo Marchisio MD, reports the results of a three year multidisciplinary study on what they call the “New Elders” — active Agers looking forward to prolonging their life up and beyond 100 years.
Compared to previous generations these elders are more active, more cultured, more conscious and engaged to help and support others. They have often in charge three generations: their parents, who now need assistance; their children who because of the recession and high level of unemployement are often still living at home; and consequantely their grandchildren.
While Dario will present the social side of the problem, the present trends in Italy and Europe and the possible solutions, Ugo will describe the medical aspect of the topic. From epidemiology to health management and economy to the new approach a health professional (all the professionals, not only doctors) should use to the elderly patients: the so called “Therapeutic Alliance” that will be briefly described declining the specific topic in the field of geriatrics. Above all the technology and organization, the “human touch” (from care to take care) is of paramount importance. But it shouldn’t be just a slogan; for a working therapeutic alliance, we need a sound professional upgrading in “Medical Humanities” with certification/selection of qualified personnel, beside global programmes of “human caring” in hospitals, nursing homes and homecare services.

Who will take care of them when the time comes?

This is the question explored in the research: “from care to take care”, where CeRRCo also planned and engaged in projects spun off from such study, hoping others might learn from those as well, to help and improve elders’quality of life.

Italy’population is the second oldest in the world and among the troublest in western Europe. Caregivers, carereceivers, and eldercare decision-makers could all benefit from the experience gleaned from working in such a Country.
From a management point of view, the quality of a health company/system should be evaluated not only from an economic point of view, but using the so called “Balanced Scorecards” (BSC) that take into account customer satisfaction, innovation, quality assurance and professionals/manpower satisfaction.
When this research is completed CeRRCo will publish the results in a booklet printed and distributed free of charge to any older adults and professionals in ageing services.

This is an invitation to attend this certain-to-be illuminating presentation!
